What exactly IS "Sim" play?
Recently, I was extended an offer to join another NCAA Football Dynasty. I am happy because I cannot get enough of that game.
The Founder of that leagues welcomed me and asked me to "keep up and play sim".
Now, I am sure the guy had all good and well meaning behind that. I ask you this, do any of you exactly even know WHAT sim is anymore? Let me share a little insight of how all this started back when Dreamcast went online with NFL2K.
There you were, playing a online game vs "John Q Public". It was fun but the guy would be down in the score and start going for it on 4th down from his own 15 and needed 22 yards to make the first. If he didn't make the first he would quit the game. Thus, the "Fear of the Non-Sim Gamer" Legend was born.
The games have evolved where there is no real glitches like those early 2K games had.
What some people now fear is guys who will use a running QB, go for it on 4th down, or run a successful play often in a game.
I am hear to tell you - WAKE UP! These are the facts of the things you fear...
a) The "Running QB" is everywhere in today's college football, and to a lesser extent - NFL Football. Many, including Corso, have stated it is the new fad because it makes defenses play that much more honest.
b) 4th down plays. Just ask the Florida Gators how Les Miles went for it 4 times successfully vs them in 2007. Heck, Les Miles called a fake punt and had his punter throw a pass out of his own endzone in his first game as LSU head coach. Crazy, yes, because had it failed I am not sure Miles would have been able land on the flight back from Tempe.
c) Gadgets. The more things change, the more the stay the same. The old "veer" formation is back with a new twist where they now call it the "Spread" Offense. Additionally, anyone who watched the 2007 LSU-Arkansas game would have lost their mind if the were in their "High & Mighty Sim Tower" watching Arkansas directly snap the ball to a RB lined up in the QB position for at least 70% of the snaps they took in that game. Now, even pro teams such as the Miami Dolphins are veering in that direction to gain an edge. Do you think Bill Bellichek (spelling?) cried foul when the Dolphins used that formation to beat his mighty Patriots early in the 2008 NFL season. If he did he would have gotten as far as if Les Miles did it - nowhere.
Face it people, it can be summed up as simple as the following statement....
OPPONENTS SHOULD USE PLAYS THAT MAKE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE!
You want them to play in a style that you are familiar with so that you know how to defgend it, stop it, and have a better chance to win. Face it, that is the bare truth. You might not like it but calling thoughtful stradigy "cheese" or unsim" is just a good cover to make yourself feel better about why YOU lost.
Until next time......
